Panama / Altieri Yuyi / Typica
Altieri Specialty Coffee, founded in 2005 by Italian-American entrepreneur Eugene Altieri, has blossomed from two humble farms in Boquete into an eminent, award-winning producer, they appearing regularly in the prestigious Best of Panama auction, including with one of their celebrated Typica lots. Through meticulous cultivation, harvesting, sorting, processing, and storage, Altieri has built a reputation as one of the world’s finest. Today, Eugene’s children carry forward his vision with a dedicated professional team, bound by the same pursuit of excellence. For the Altieri family, coffee is not merely business, it is passion.
Typica is Panama’s earliest cultivated variety, its lineage tracing back to Ethiopia and Yemen before becoming the genetic foundation of many iconic cultivars. Revered for its smooth sweetness and delicate florals, Typica is both temperamental and low-yielding and has become increasingly rare in Panama since the rise of Gesha, despite flourishing in the volcanic soils of its highlands.
Altieri’s Mima Estate lies on the eastern slopes of Volcán Barú, bordering the protected cloud forests of Barú National Park. Within its Yuyi plot, Typica thrives in a shaded sanctuary of bamboo and wild blackberries, where Pacific and Atlantic winds collide to shape one of the world’s most extraordinary coffee-growing environments.
